    Description

An exceptionally rare and important antique 1900-1910 Cartier carved smoky quartz miniature sculpture / model of a french bulldog. This unique work of art was created by the French Cartier firm sometimes during the Edwardian era and turn of the century while Cartier and the Imperial Russian firm of Faberge were rivals in many Objet de Vertu (objects of virtue) and jewelry aspects, including custom carved from semi precious gem stones unique figures and models of animals.
The carved semi transparent smoky quartz figure of a French bulldog has intricately set round old European cut diamond eyes, as well as an 18 karat gold dog collar with a hanging natural pearl pendant attached to it. The size of this miniature sculpture measures 28mm (1.10") across and 27mm (1.07") tall. Gross weight of the figure is 7.6 grams and is in absolutely perfect condition.
Along with all attached images, there are also a couple of images of a virtually identical Cartier pieces from other private collections. There are several such pieces known in important collections, including the Royal Collection of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
The present carved figure of a frenchie bulldog is one of the best examples of this rivalry competition between the two highly praised jewelry firms of Cartier and Faberge. There are also very similar pieces of French bulldogs carved by Faberge and quite often these pieces are mistaken to be made by Cartier and vice versa. A very similar piece is currently offered by a well known London gallery for over £22,000.
Absolutely scarce and rare antique work of jewelry art piece and one of the rarest creations and jewels of the Cartier - France firm and its workmasters.
